Mosquitoes are the family Culicidae—3,600 species of small flies. They originated in the Cretaceous. They are dipterans with a four-stage life cycle: egg, larva, pupa, adult.
How it works, in terms someone would actually use
Mosquitoes lay eggs on water surfaces. Larvae hatch and feed on aquatic algae and organic material. They pupate, then emerge as adults. All adults feed on nectar. Many females also pierce skin and suck blood using a highly adapted proboscis.
What it gets right
