Pleurotus grows on dead wood. It breaks down lignin and cellulose using white-rot enzymes. Some species paralyse nematodes with 3-octanone from toxocysts.
What it gets right
It reliably colonises hardwood debris. Its decurrent gills and lateral cap attachment make field ID robust. Its monomitic hyphal system supports rapid, soft fruiting.

It does not form persistent perennial structures. It does not grow on living trees as a primary pathogen. It does not lack clamp connections or produce ornamented spores.
