Peafowl courtship hinges on the male’s train: eyespots must catch sunlight at precise angles; females respond to eyespot number, not symmetry or length — but only in some populations.
What it gets right
It gets right that eyespot number predicts mating success in Whipsnade’s feral population — and that pruning eyespots reduces female interest, increases male predation, and lowers offspring weight and survival.

It does not prove female choice is universally driven by train ornamentation. Takahashi’s seven-year Japanese field study found no preference for more eyespots, symmetry, or train length.
