The African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis) is a distinct elephant species native to humid tropical forests in West Africa and the Congo Basin. It was first described in 1900.
How it works, in terms someone would actually use
It moves through dense rainforest in family groups of up to 20, foraging on leaves, seeds, fruit, and bark from at least 96 plant species. Bulls leave at sexual maturity and usually live alone. Adults communicate and navigate using low-frequency rumbles. Both sexes grow straight, down-pointing tusks from age 1–3.
What it gets right
It gets forest ecology right: its diet and movement disperse seeds across vast distances, sustaining tree diversity in humid tropical forests. Its small size and downward tusks suit dense undergrowth navigation better than any other elephant.
