Cane toad (Rhinella marina) is a large, terrestrial true toad native to South and mainland Central America. Fossil evidence from the late Miocene in Colombia shows morphological continuity with modern specimens. It prefers open habitats, breeds prolifically (thousands of eggs per spawn), feeds opportunistically on both dead and living matter, and possesses poison glands that make adults and tadpoles highly toxic — especially dangerous to dogs.
