Japanese giant salamander
It hunts blind—by feeling water tremble.
The Japanese giant salamander is a fully aquatic, endemic amphibian of western Honshu, Shikoku and northern Kyushu. It is the third-largest salamander in the world. Its brown and black mottled skin provides camouflage against stream and river bottoms. Large skin folds on its neck increase body surface area to assist epidermal gas exchange with water. When threatened, it excretes a strong-smelling, milky substance. It has very poor eyesight and uses a lateral line system of vibration-detecting sensory cells for hunting. Adult males develop enlarged cloacal glands and have larger, wider heads than females during breeding season. Mark-recapture records show migration between mainstem rivers and tributaries. It is threatened by habitat fragmentation, pollution, dams and hybridisation with the Chinese giant salamander. Its IUCN status is Vulnerable.
