What the species is and where it came from
The mountain gorilla is Gorilla beringei beringei — a subspecies of the eastern gorilla. It evolved in the Albertine Rift montane cloud forest. It is not a separate species, nor is it the same as the Grauer’s gorilla.
How it works, in terms someone would actually use
It lives in cold, misty montane cloud forest between 2,200 and 4,300 m elevation. It eats leaves, shoots, stems and pith from 142 plant species. Its thick, long fur keeps it warm. It is found only in two isolated pockets: the Virunga Mountains across Uganda, Rwanda and DRC, and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda.
