What the species is and where it came from
A rainbow is not a species. It is an optical phenomenon — a transient pattern of light formed in airborne water droplets under specific geometric conditions.
How it works, in terms someone would actually use
Sunlight enters a water droplet, bends (refracts), reflects once inside, then bends again as it exits — splitting into colours. The observer must stand with sun behind them and water droplets in front, at a low sun angle.
What it gets right
It reliably places red at 42° from the anti-solar point, violet at 40°, with a second arc at ~52° showing reversed order. Its polarisation and angular concentration are physically precise and repeatable.
What it does not
It does not move. It has no location. It is not an object in the sky. You cannot approach it, photograph its source, or find its end.
What it changed
It changed how humans map light: proving white light contains colour, and that geometry governs perception. It anchored optics in measurable angles, not metaphor.
Who it is for, and who it is not
It is for anyone who sees sunlight and water at the right angle. It is not for those seeking permanence, ownership, taxonomy, or biological agency.
