The saguaro (Carnegiea gigantea) is a tree-like cactus endemic to the Sonoran Desert.

It stores rainwater in its stem, swelling visibly when hydrated. It opens stomata only at night to limit water loss. Its roots spread wide and shallow, with a single deep taproot anchoring it.

It gets water storage right: up to 2,200 kg when full. It gets longevity right: cells live up to 150 years; individuals routinely live 150–200 years. It gets root architecture right: 30 m lateral spread, 1 m deep taproot.
