It is a penguin native to the Antarctic coast. It evolved 19 million years ago. It is named after Adélie Land, which was named for Adèle Dumont d’Urville. French explorers collected the first specimens in the late 1830s and early 1840s. Hombron and Jacquinot described it scientifically in 1841.
