Albatrosses are large seabirds in the family Diomedeidae, order Procellariiformes. They range widely in the Southern Ocean and North Pacific. They are absent from the North Atlantic today but lived there until the Pleistocene. They depend on cold water currents for foraging and nesting. The geographically outlying genus Phoebastria—which includes three North Pacific species and an equatorial (Galapagos) species—exploits the California, Alaska, Oyashio and Humboldt currents, nesting on major oceanic islands near those currents. Great albatrosses are among the largest of flying birds, with wingspans reaching up to 2.5–3.5 metres (8.2–11.5 ft) and bodies over 1 metre (3.3 ft) in length. Albatrosses are highly efficient in the air, using dynamic soaring and slope soaring to cover great distances with little exertion. They feed on squid, fish, and krill by either scavenging, surface seizing, or diving. Twenty-one of 22 IUCN-recognized species are threatened, with conservation statuses spanning Critically Endangered to Near Threatened.
