Antlions are ~2,000 neuropteran insect species in the family Myrmeleontidae. They occur globally, wherever dry, sandy habitats allow larval pit construction.
How it works, in terms someone would actually use
Antlion larvae dig conical pits in dry, sandy soil. They lie buried at the bottom, sensing vibrations through tufts of hairs on their hind thoracic segments. When prey stumbles in, they hurl sand to destabilise it, then seize it with venomous jaws.
What it gets right
They get pit ambush right: vibration-based targeting, sand-throwing disruption, venom-assisted digestion, and death-feigning that lifts survival by 20%. All are verified adaptations to unstable, arid substrates.
