Theobroma cacao is a small evergreen tree native to the tropical Americas. It was domesticated ~5,300 years ago in southeastern Ecuador. Genetic clusters originated over 5,000 years ago around Iquitos (Peru and Ecuador), giving rise to the Nacional variety.
