Cordyceps is a genus of over 260 ascomycete fungi, mostly parasitic, with a worldwide distribution and highest known diversity in Asia.
How it works, in terms someone would actually use
Cordyceps infects insects and other arthropods by invading their bodies with mycelium, which replaces host tissue. It produces an ascocarp bearing perithecia that contain thread-like ascospores — these break into fragments and are presumed infective.

It correctly identifies a parasitic strategy shared across many ascomycete fungi: endoparasitoidism on arthropods, worldwide distribution, and morphological naming from Greek ‘club’ and Latin ‘head’.
