What the species is and where it came from
Quercus suber is a medium-sized, evergreen oak in section Cerris. It is native to southwest Europe and northwest Africa. It is an ancient Mediterranean species with Tertiary fossil remains.
How it works, in terms someone would actually use
Cork is harvested from its bark every 9–12 years starting at age 25. The tree survives repeated harvests. It supplies cork for wine stoppers, flooring, and cricket ball cores.
What it gets right
It endures drought. It stabilises poor, rocky, acidic soils. It supports high biodiversity in woodlands. Its bark insulates against fire.
What it does not
It does not grow on calcareous soils. It does not tolerate high rainfall or cold winters. It does not regenerate reliably where Phytophthora cinnamomi or Diplodia corticola are present.
What it changed
It changed land use in the western Mediterranean by enabling centuries of sustainable bark harvesting without felling trees.
