Sequoiadendron giganteum is a coniferous tree native to the western slopes of California’s Sierra Nevada.

It grows on granitic soils between 1,400–2,150 m elevation on the western slopes of California’s Sierra Nevada. It survives fire with bark up to 0.9 m thick and releases seeds from serotinous cones only after burning.

It gets fire right: thick bark, canopy-stored cones, and rapid post-fire seedling establishment in mineral soil.

It does not resist drought. It does not regenerate well outside its narrow elevational band. It does not survive repeated high-intensity wildfire.
