What the species is and where it came from
The emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) is the tallest and heaviest living penguin. It is endemic to Antarctica. It was described in 1844 by George Robert Gray. It is one of only two extant species in the genus Aptenodytes.
How it works, in terms someone would actually use
It dives to 535 m for up to 20 minutes. It breeds on Antarctic pack ice in winter. Males incubate a single egg for just over two months without feeding. Females forage at sea during that time. Parents then alternate foraging and chick care.
What it gets right
It gets thermoregulation right: dense feathers, fat, haemoglobin adaptation, and bone density allow deep diving and -40°C survival. It gets reproductive timing right: synchronising egg laying with the harshest season ensures chicks fledge as summer peaks.
What it does not
It does not survive without stable sea ice. It does not breed on land. It does not share incubation duty. It does not tolerate ice-free winters.
What it changed
It redefined what vertebrate reproduction can withstand: male-only incubation through Antarctic winter, sustained by metabolic suppression, solid bones, dense feathers, and sub-dermal fat. No other bird does this.
