The wolf (Canis lupus) is a large, social, carnivorous canid native to Eurasia and North America. More than thirty subspecies exist, including the dog and dingo—but ‘grey wolves’ refer only to naturally occurring wild subspecies.

Wolves live in nuclear families: a mated pair and their offspring. They hunt cooperatively, using physical adaptations and expressive behaviour like howling. Offspring disperse at sexual maturity or under food pressure. Territorial fights kill many.
