Hibernation is not a species. It is a physiological strategy used by some endothermic animals—including rodents, bears, and the fat-tailed dwarf lemur—to survive food scarcity during seasonal downturns.
How it works, in terms someone would actually use
Hibernation is a seasonal state of minimal activity and metabolic reduction. It lowers body temperature, breathing, heart rate, and metabolism. Animals enter it to conserve energy when food is scarce. They must store enough energy beforehand—sometimes for an entire winter.
