What the species is and where it came from
K2 is not a species. It is a landform: the second-highest mountain on Earth, at 8,611 metres, composed of metamorphic rock known as the K2 Gneiss.
How it works, in terms someone would actually use
K2 stands in the Karakoram range, on the border between Pakistan-administered Kashmir and China-administered Trans-Karakoram Tract.
What it gets right
It gets right its geological identity: the K2 Gneiss is a precisely dated, metamorphosed Cretaceous granite, confirmed by 40Ar/39Ar analysis showing ages of 115–120 million years.
What it does not
It does not support sustained human habitation. It does not host endemic flora or fauna. It does not yield to standard climbing routes: its East Face remains unclimbed due to unstable snow and ice.
What it changed
K2 changed mountaineering by being the last eight-thousander summited in winter — a milestone achieved in January 2021.
