What the species is and where it came from
Mount Everest is a mountain. It sits on the China–Nepal border in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas. It is made of Ordovician limestone, Cambrian marble and phyllite, and high-grade schist and leucogranite.
How it works, in terms someone would actually use
Mount Everest is a landform, not a species. It does not eat, breed, migrate or behave. It is measured, climbed, named and contested.
What it gets right
It gets right the principle that elevation is a measurement, not a fact — and that every method reveals a different surface: snow, ice, rock, or geoid.
What it does not
It does not establish ecological function. It hosts no endemic species. It has no soil, no vegetation zone, no animal community of its own.

It changed how national surveys define ‘height’: snow cap versus rock head, and whose authority settles the difference.
