Tepuis are ancient, isolated quartz arenite mesas in northern South America — especially southeastern Venezuela, western Guyana, and northern Brazil — forming the distinct biogeographic region Pantepui. Their nutrient-poor, craggy summits foster high plant endemism, including Drosera, Heliamphora, orchids and bromeliads. Though long thought to host relict species shaped by vicariant speciation after plateau fragmentation ~70 mya, recent evidence shows some lineages (e.g., Tepuihyla treefrogs) diversified post-isolation via colonization from lowlands. They exhibit karst-like features — massive sinkholes and quartzite caves — despite being composed of relatively insoluble rock. Botanical exploration, notably the Guayana Shield Program, documented 2,447 vascular plant species in Pantepui, 42% endemic, many restricted to single tepuis.
Old theory said tepui endemics were relicts; new data shows Tepuihyla treefrogs colonised after formation.
