What the species is and where it came from
Aposematism is not a species. It is a defensive strategy observed in poison dart frogs (Dendrobatidae), nudibranchs, crown-of-thorns starfish, skunks, rattlesnakes, and Polyphemus moth caterpillars — among others.
How it works, in terms someone would actually use
Aposematism works by making an animal hard to miss — bright colours, loud sounds, or strong smells tell predators ‘I am dangerous or unpleasant’. It is not camouflage. It is advertising.
What it gets right
It correctly links conspicuousness with toxicity. It accounts for both innate and learned aversion in birds. It explains why warning signals persist across species and ecosystems.
What it does not
It does not apply to all warning signals. It does not explain cryptic defences, startle displays, or bluffing without real unprofitability. It is not about intimidation alone — it requires honesty: the signal must match actual defence.

It changed how biologists understand predator–prey interactions. It shifted explanation from passive concealment to active communication — a signal that benefits both parties.

Is it worth your time
Yes. It explains why some animals are vividly coloured, how predators learn to avoid them, and why mimicry evolves. It is testable, observable, and grounded in experiments from 1869 onward.
