Gaboon viper
The world’s heaviest viper doesn’t hunt—it waits, armed with the longest fangs and most venom of any snake.
The Gaboon viper is a heavy, cryptic, ambush-foraging viper of sub-Saharan African rainforests and savannas. It is the largest Bitis. It has the longest fangs (5.1 cm) and highest venom yield of any snake. Lenk et al. (1999) split its western population into Bitis rhinoceros. Females are markedly heavier and shorter-tailed than males. It eats amphibians, birds, and mammals—including royal antelope and hares—using cytotoxic and cardiotoxic venom. It is viviparous, with litters up to 60.
It is the largest Bitis—up to 175 cm long—and lives only in sub-Saharan Africa’s rainforests and savannas.
