Common Surinam toad
The only tetrapod that inflates its whole trunk to eat—and incubates froglets in its own skin.
The Common Surinam toad is a fully-aquatic frog native to tropical South America and Trinidad. It ambushes prey underwater using inertial suction feeding—possibly the only tetrapod that enlarges its entire trunk during feeding. Its flat, dull body provides camouflage in murky freshwater. Females embed eggs into honeycomb-like depressions in their dorsal skin, releasing fully-formed froglets after 4–5 months. It lacks dermal antimicrobial peptides, increasing susceptibility to chytridiomycosis and Ranavirus. On land, it is helpless and cannot move. Though IUCN-listed as Least Concern, it faces threats from Amazonian deforestation and habitat fragmentation.
Its flat, dull body mimics rotting wood—so perfectly it vanishes in murky water.
