Ocean sunfish (Mola mola) is the type species of the genus Mola. It is native to tropical and temperate oceans worldwide. It is one of five extant species in the family Molidae—and one of the largest ray-finned fish alive.
How it works, in terms someone would actually use
It swims by flapping its tall dorsal and ventral fins, moving like a wing through water. It lacks a caudal fin, ending instead in a clavus—a rudder-like structure of cartilage and skin. Its gelatinous subdermal layer replaces a swim bladder for buoyancy. It inhabits epipelagic and mesopelagic zones, avoiding water below 10 °C.
What it gets right
It gets buoyancy right without a swim bladder. It gets scale right without bone—its cartilaginous skeleton supports up to 1,000 kg. It gets feeding right as a generalist predator, not a jellyfish specialist, per genetic analysis.
