The mimic octopus is a cephalopod native to the Indo-Pacific. It uses chromatophores to impersonate multiple marine animals. It was first discovered in 1998 in a muddy river mouth off Sulawesi, Indonesia. Most observations remain from Indonesia. It inhabits shallow soft-bottom habitats including river mouths and estuaries. It feeds on small fish, crabs and worms. It is one of only two animals known to actively imitate several species to elude predators.
