What the species is and where it came from
The mimic octopus (Thaumoctopus mimicus) is a cephalopod native to the Indo-Pacific, first documented in 1998 on the muddy bottom of a river mouth off Sulawesi, Indonesia.
How it works, in terms someone would actually use
It uses chromatophores to change colour, shape and movement — impersonating flatfish, lionfish, sea snakes and others while hunting or resting in shallow muddy water.
What it gets right
It gets disguise right: coordinated colour, posture and locomotion let it pass as multiple dangerous or unpalatable animals.
What it does not
It does not inhabit coral reefs, rocky shores or deep water. It does not mimic terrestrial animals or non-marine species.
What it changed
It redefined mimicry: no other animal is known to actively imitate several distinct species for both defence and offence.
Who it is for, and who it is not
It is for divers, marine biologists and naturalists working in soft-bottom Indo-Pacific habitats — not for reef snorkellers or aquarium visitors.
Is it worth your time
Yes — if you are diving or snorkelling in Indonesia’s river mouths, Sulawesi estuaries or the Gulf of Thailand, where most observations occur.
