What the species is and where it came from
The saiga antelope (Saiga tatarica) is the sole living member of its genus. It evolved on the mammoth steppe, ranged from the British Isles to Beringia in the Pleistocene, and historically occupied the Eurasian steppe from the Carpathians to Dzungaria.
How it works, in terms someone would actually use
It filters dust and cools air with oversized, flexible nostrils while migrating across open steppe. It eats grasses and forbs. Wolves and eagles prey on calves. It moves in herds that can number tens of thousands.
What it gets right
It maintains long-distance migrations across flat, open steppe—Ustyurt to Uzbekistan, Kalmykia to Astrakhan—despite roads, fences and oil infrastructure. Its nostrils humidify cold air and trap dust during spring dust storms.
