Manta rays are three Mobula species—M. birostris, M. yarae, and M. alfredi—reclassified from genus Manta. They inhabit warm temperate to tropical waters. M. birostris and M. yarae migrate oceanically; M. alfredi is coastal and resident. All are obligate filter feeders using open mouths and cephalic fins to gather zooplankton. They possess high brain-to-body ratios and evidence of self-recognition. All are IUCN Vulnerable due to gill-raker harvesting, entanglement, and low reproductive output.
They are three Mobula species—not one—and were reclassified out of genus Manta.
