Aurelia aurita is a true jellyfish, endemic to the northeastern Atlantic — including the Baltic Sea, where the 1758 type specimen was collected — and confirmed in Argentina. It is not the former cosmopolitan species but one of at least 28 split in the 2020s.
How it works, in terms someone would actually use
It drifts with currents. It feeds on medusae, plankton, copepods, mollusks, and fish eggs using short, fine tentacles. Its benthic polyp stage survives months without food, tolerates estuaries, bays, fjords, and polluted waters, and requires a native microbiome to trigger strobilation.
What it gets right
It gets polyp plasticity right: low feeding selectivity, multi-habitat tolerance, and starvation resistance. It gets reproductive plasticity right: adjusting offspring number and size to food availability. It gets microbiome dependence right: bacteria regulate gene expression during strobilation.
