It is the largest salamander in North America. It is endemic to eastern and central U.S. streams. It is the only extant member of Cryptobranchus.

It breathes through capillaries in lateral skin folds — not gills, not lungs alone — requiring fast-flowing, oxygen-rich water to pass over those folds continuously.

It gets cutaneous respiration right: lateral skin folds deliver oxygen directly from water, making it uniquely suited to high-oxygen riffles.
What it does not
It does not tolerate slow-moving, warm or sediment-choked water. It does not use gills as an adult. It does not survive outside fast-flowing streams.
