The hoatzin is a South American wetland bird, endemic to riverine and marshy habitats. Fossil opisthocomiforms once lived across Europe, Africa, and South America; only this lineage survives.

The hoatzin digests leaves using foregut fermentation — specialised bacteria in the front part of its gut break down foliage over up to 45 hours. It eats mostly leaves (82% in one Venezuelan study), plus flowers and fruit.
